The Beak Mask is based on the masks that doctors wore during the Bubonic Plague in the 14th century. These masks would contain perfumes and scents to prevent the doctors from smelling the stench emitted by those infected with the disease; the doctors believed this to be one of the mechanisms of transmission of the plague.
